When you can and can’t preview

Tuesday, July 25th, 2006

I was in the Teach Tab today, looking through a course. You cannot preview HTML files (that are stored in a folder) from the Teach Tab. You can’t tell at all that they are HTML files, and I assumed they were PDFs. My bad. My other error was that you can click on a file too look at in while in the Teach Tab.

Lesson learned: and one I tell people all the time. Check what tab you are in.

Library’s Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism Tutorial Now Available in WebCT

Friday, July 21st, 2006

The SFU Library is pleased to announce that its Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism tutorial is now available as a WebCT module for import into any existing WebCT course. This interactive tutorial is designed to help students understand what plagiarism is and how to avoid committing it. Working through the tutorial, students will learn to recognize different types of plagiarism and be introduced to various practical skills — citing, note-taking, quoting, and paraphrasing — that will assist them in the writing process. The tutorial takes about 30 minutes to complete and includes two interactive quizzes to test students’ comprehension. The tutorial has been set up to allow for easy tracking of student completion. By integrating Understanding and Avoiding Plagiarism into your own WebCT course, you can emphasize the importance of these skills to your students.

If you’re interested in having this tutorial integrated into your WebCT course, please contact Trish Rosseel, Bennett Library Reference Division Head, at trosseel@sfu.ca

This folder is currently empty

Friday, July 21st, 2006

I was looking through someone’s course the other day when I noticed that warning. WebCT really wants you to add a link to anything on their main page, and this user was only using the course menu, placing text in the header and footer. The result was “This folder is currently empty. Use the navigation to the left to navigate to course content,” visible to students, instructors and designers.

The solution seems to be to place a fake link to something on the main page.
