When moving between tabs, WebCT returns to main page

Monday, November 27th, 2006

If you are in the discussions tool, for example, and you wish to switch between teach to build tab, WebCT will return to the main page instead of remembering that you were in the discussions tab. This has been reported to WebCT support. (Reported to WebCT January 2006)

No “reply with quote function” in CE 6

Monday, November 27th, 2006

There is no longer an option to reply with quote in the discussions area of CE 6.

  • Answer: If you compile messages, then at the bottom of the message should be an icon with a couple of “v” shaped arrows, and the text: In Reply to: [previous message title].

Multiple announcements

Monday, November 27th, 2006

If a university wide announcement is made, instructors and designers will receive it multiple times (depending on how many courses you have). Reported to WebCT. (added February 2006)

  • Answer: fixed with Service Pack 1

Can’t see web folder in Firefox

Monday, November 27th, 2006

In the File Manager, there is an option to open the file manager as a web folder, which enables “drag and drop” loading of files.

On a PC, this option does NOT appear in Firefox, only in Internet Explorer. This has been reported to WebCT.

Answer: If you are on a PC, you can use Internet Explorer, or you can set up a Network Place. [more instructions here]

Mail forwarding irregularly

Monday, November 27th, 2006

This is fixed as of May 2008.

Mail is not consistently forwarded from the Mail tool to an external account. This has been reported to WebCT (September 2006).

Update: February 2007. Many others have reported this problem, and WebCT is working on it.

Resize images

Monday, November 20th, 2006

I sometimes like to add images to WebCT, or use a photo of my own as an icon. It’s always been so much trouble though to open Photoshop (which I’m not very comfortable with) just to resize a photo. In my travels through other blogs, I found this nifty online application called ResizR that allows me to quickly upload a photo, resize it, and then save the new, smaller image on my desktop.

It’s a simple, quick application that does exactly what I need it to do, and nothing more.

Known issue: course menu truncated titles

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

This is fixed as of May 2008.

Course titles are truncated in the course content map, making it pretty messy. We are not the only ones to have noticed this.
This has been reported to WebCT (September 2006).

Update (October 25th). WebCT is aware of this bug and is being worked on for the next WebCT upgrade release

Known issue: searching in discussion postings

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

One of the tools that you can add to a WebCT course section is the Search tool. This search tool will search through all HTML pages in your WebCT course section.

The search tool does not currently work in the discussion area. It will return 0 hits, even on words that you know are found in the discussion area.
This has been reported to WebCT (September 2006).

The case of the jumping curser

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

It was driving me nuts: I’d open up a new mail message or discussion posting and start typing away. The curser would suddenly jump back to the subject header. It’s nice to know, therefore, that I’m not alone. WebCT is in fact aware of this bug, and a fix should be out in their next hotfix.

Internet Explorer 7

Monday, November 6th, 2006

IE7 is already available for download, and they’ll start “pushing” it to users soon.

Currently, IE7 is NOT a supported browser for WebCT CE6. I’ve already downloaded the new Internet Explorer, and it seems to work just fine with WebCT, but I do get the annoying pop-up window warning me that it’s not a supported browser. WebCT is aware of this, and is currently testing the new browser.
